There are several ways to set up your own radio station. It depends on how serious you are about it. The single most important thing you should know before you get started is why would you need to start your own radio station?
Maybe, it’s because you are a DJ or you have a band and want to reach an audience with your songs. Maybe, you have a huge collection of rock music and want to share it with the world. Maybe you are a member of club and want to make money by broadcasting a certain type of music along with commercials. Maybe you are a candidate and want to spread the word about your nomination and your speeches. Or maybe you are just person who is passionate about radio stations and always wanted to start your own FM radio station. Whatever the case, you need to know what you are doing.
Here are the basics of setting up a new radio station in a nutshell.
First you have to make decisions on two issues. You must choose the right place where your studio will be located. Also you must decide whether your radio transmitter will be placed at your studio or in a remote location.
Next, it’s time to obtain a FM radio station license that will allow you to legally broadcast your signal.
There are two types of FM radio station license:
- The low power FM (Local)
- The full power FM (Commercial)
- License for Internet radio (Streaming Media)
You can start broadcasting your new radio station by obtaining at least one of the licenses mentioned. If you are serious about this then your goal should be to first acquire a low power FM license and then move on to the full power license. There’s also the option to set up a radio station that streams sound on the internet which is the easiest way to go with, if you have no previous experience in FM radio stations.
Here are some issues you must consider after applying for the radio station license:
- How much money are you willing to spend for start up and ongoing costs?
- What type of equipment will you need? For example transmission equipment or a radio automation system etc. Do you know how to choose the best transmitter for your radio station?
- What is the process of getting in the air? Do you know how to use your equipment and go live? For example, do you know how many watts your broadcast equipment can handle?
- How will you deal with music licensing, royalties and copyright issues? Do you know that you actually have to pay for that too?
- How well informed are you on the subject of frequencies? Acquiring a license is one thing and obtaining a frequency for your radio station is a different thing. You have to fill and submit an application to request a new frequency.
- Do you know what kind of personnel you need? Do you have a plan to find the right people for the job?
The idea of broadcasting your messages to others through a radio station becomes more and more popular. These days, we are so empowered with communication possibilities than ever before. For very little money anyone can broadcast their messages to the world.

Marketing professionals have always been extremely innovative in using various mediums and Internet marketing professionals are probably the most proactive group in this fraternity when it comes to employing some new medium to spread their message.
While Internet marketing has come of age with the recent social media marketing evolution and other aggressive variations like viral marketing; marketers are yet to discover the full potential of another extremely effective medium – Internet Radio.
Radio has been used as a marketing medium ever since its inception. However, with the advent of TV, Internet and various other ways of entertainment, traditional radio has lost its importance to some extent. Internet radio has been successful in bringing back the focus to this medium. As the number of Internet users is on the rise every passing day, so is the number of people who listen to Internet radio. This growing number of Internet radio listeners definitely provides a lucrative field for the marketers to push their message.
There are several Internet radio stations that are extremely professional and host quality shows. These radio stations have a good number of regular listeners. There are stations that are particularly dedicated to certain industries and these Internet radio stations can actually be a gold mine for marketers working in those specific niche.
There are several advantages of using Internet radio as your advertising medium, some of which can be as follows:
A relatively new medium used by lesser number of advertisers, so your message doesn’t get lost among another thousand advertisements.
Many Internet radio stations are specific to certain niche, so if you are advertising a product specific to that niche, you are actually hitting your target segment specifically.
You really don’t need to give an advertisement! You can simply be a guest at any of the talk radio shows on a popular Internet radio station and that would do wonders to promote your brand. Of course you need to know your stuff if you are considering this option.
When a user listens to an Internet radio station, he actually logs on to that website or clicks the “play” button to listen to it. More user involvement indicates more engaged users resulting in easier penetration of marketing message.
We come across more ads on visual media than on any audio medium – it is expected the attention share would be more in this case.
Internet radio carries with it the inherent nature of Internet – it is Global! You are not just advertising to your own city or town, Internet radio has the capacity to take your message to the world.
Some marketers have already started using the better-known Internet talk radio stations for advertising their products and services. However, this medium is still probably at its infancy with respect to commercialization. It is expected that the marketers will definitely make full use of its potential with the increase in popularity of the medium. Who knows, Internet radio might turn out to be the next big thing in the marketing field!

Subscription-based satellite radio service is at the forefront of the US music market. Long gone are the days when people when the only option was in choosing from just one or two measly stations that had poor reception and overbearing, irritating disk jockeys and commercials!

This is great news for people who regularly listen to alternative sub-genres like Punk Rock, Death Metal, Christian Rock or Electronica! Satellite radio blends the best of both worlds – the specific ambiance of a CD, with the consumer’s need for exposure to new music in fact it seems that new stations are popping up on a weekly basis.

What is the purpose of free radio stations? Free radio stations are way to listen to music without the advertisement and commercials from the major corporations. Now not all free radio stations are ad or commercial free, some radio stations do have ads and commercials. These are still free radio stations but free in a different way. These radio stations are free for you to listen to but they still charge for advertisement and commercial time.
The radio stations which charge for advertisement and commercial space differ big time from the radio stations which do not have advertisement or commercial space. First off radio stations which charge for ads and commercials have to cater to their sponsors. Don’t you hate it when you are listening to a radio station and they go to commercial every 7 minutes? That is because they have to make room for all of their sponsor’s ads and commercials to air. Normally the higher the ratings the more sponsor ads and commercials. Radio Stations which charge for on air ads and commercials cater to their paid advertisers. That is how they make their money. Before Howard Stern went to Satellite Radio if you ever watched his show you would notice how every 5 mins he would have to go to a commercial break, plus he was heavily censored on what he could say and what he could not say. The reason for this is two-fold. First Howard Stern had the number 1 show on the radio, so CBS was charging top dollar to get ad or commercial time during his show. The more commercial slots CBS could fill in the more money they made. Which butchered the show because they would go to a commercial break every five minutes. Now on the censorship, the big deal with censorship is the CBS company does not want Howard Stern to offend viewers. Not because they have high moral grounds but because they are afraid they may lose sponsors willing to pay for airtime on his show. Just look at what happened with Don Imus or Michael Vick, major corporations pulled the plug right away on the both of them because they did not want to lose customer sales.
With radio stations that charge for airtime there are many fine lines and politics they must follow. With radio stations who do not charge for airtime space they are in more control of what they play and what they say. The only problem with them is they do not normally make the same amount of income the larger stations make since they do not charge for airtime space. No matter which types of free radio stations you decide to listen to, just know when a station does not play commercials or play ads, you will get a better radio experience.
Free radio stations are the route many consumers are going since paid radio stations have way too many commercials. With free radio stations you will not have to listen to all of the garbage that goes along with them.
