Recording FM Radio with WinTV and Hauppauge tuner

Many radio stations now offer live streaming over the internet. While this use of technology does appeal to me, it still does not solve the issue of the radio program playing live online and on the air when I just really don’t have the freedom to listen. There are also many times that I wish I was listening to a recording instead, complete with pause, rewind, and the ability to stop and resume later even when I don’t have internet available.

With the Hauppauge tuner in my home theater computer, scheduling and recording television programs was a snap using Windows Media Center, yet a little poking around and I could find no way to record radio let alone schedule a recording using Windows Media Center. As much I have enjoyed using this as the primary interface for my home theater experience, I needed an alternative to record radio. Fortunately, the Hauppauge tuner came with WinTV.

Using WinTV, you can schedule recordings much like an old school VCR. While this was inconvenient for television when I could use Windows Media Center to setup a scheduled recording just like most DVRs through a television listing, to record radio is not so convenient. After setting up the tuner for FM radio, I looked up the schedule for my favorite radio program and then setup WinTV to record weekly.

Here are the steps I used to schedule my FM radio recording using WinTV.

Open WinTV.
Right click on the WinTV screen. This will bring up a menu of choices.
Select Scheduler to open the WinTV Scheduler. You should see a list of your scheduled WinTV recordings.
Choose whether to add a new recording or edit an existing one.
You may want to name your recording. The final recording file will be [your chosen name]_[date of recording given as yyyymmdd]_[hour and minute recording started given as tttt]. Giving your recording a name will make it a lot easier to find the program your looking for. I record two programs each weekday, so when I open the files later for listening it is helpful to read the name without having to look at the time index and figure out which radio program I am about to listen to.
Select the radio channel.
Select recording Start Time. For example, I start my evening recording at 18:57, which most of us know as 6:57 PM.
Choose a duration or End Time. I could have started my recording at 7:00 PM and chosen 180 minutes to record all three hours of the program. Since I started my recording a few minutes before 7:00 PM, I chose an end time of 22:03, which is 10:03 PM. This automatically updated my recording time to 186 minutes total.
Select an action for At Completion. While some options will save electricity, Keep Running is ideal for those of us who are using a home theater computer for recording throughout the day or week, remember I do two recordings each day. This is part of why I prefer to build computers with a lower wattage.
Select the Recurrence. In my example, the radio program plays weekly, Monday through Friday. By clicking Record Weekly, I am then able to check each applicable day.
When complete, click Okay.

Your recording is now ready. WinTV records in the ts file format. You can play this file back using WinTV, installing the appropriate drivers for Windows Media Player, or use an alternative program. As for myself, I like using VLC media player. Not only will it play my radio recordings, I can also use it play a wide range of alternative video and audio formats that Windows does not support natively.

If you would like to record radio on your PC and don’t have a FM tuner already, you can either buy the tuner itself and add it to your computer as even some models come in USB, or Burke Computers would gladly sell you a home theater computer with a Hauppauge tuner already installed.

If you are thinking of taking a car trip you absolutely must have a satellite radio for your vehicle. With a satellite radio you won’t have to spend hours of your trip trying to find a new radio station. Instead, you will be able to keep the same station on during your whole trip.

Both of the major satellite systems offer hundreds of themed stations so if you like listening to sports or listening to kids music you will be able to find the right station for you. Sirius and XM Radio use separate radio frequencies to transmit their music throughout the country. No matter which service you choose you are sure to have uninterrupted music for your whole trip.

One problem that many people are having is that each service provider has specific programs that are only available to their subscribers. One offers baseball coverage while the other offers football coverage. One is more broadcasting based while the other is more programming based. Many customers liked aspects of both services and just could not decide on which one was best for them. For these customers Interoperable Technologies was started.

Interoperable Technologies is a joint venture between Sirius Radio and XM Radio. Their goal is to offer customers a new programming product that will combine all the best features of both services. Customers will have to pay a little bit more than the usual satellite radio price but the higher price is well worth it for individuals who really enjoy having satellite radio in their vehicle.

In their research Interoperable technologies has found many clients that are willing to pay a higher monthly fee to get both services. But customers are also a little leery about if this is every going to actually happen, because right now the whole thing is still in the developmental stage and no combined service is yet available to the general public.

Satellite radio is a great new way of listening to music and enjoying the variety of channels that are available anywhere in the country. You are no longer confined to the local radio channels; instead you can browse music stations based on their themes. By browsing this way you can find the exact type of music to fit any mood you are in.

You don’t have to be taking a road trip to enjoy satellite radio stations. Anyone who has a vehicle will find that these radio services are a great way to get the most out of their radios, no matter what kind of trip they are taking. Even driving to the grocery store is more fun with a satellite radio system in your vehicle.

Disaster looms! Two days ago now a federal court denied a plea to delay the massive increase in rates webcasters must pay the record labels. This means that, absent immediate Congressional action, the new ruinous royalty rates will be going into effect on Monday threatening the future of all internet radio.

People can actually help stop this by calling their Congressional representatives in the Senate and asking them to force immediate action on the Internet Radio Equality Act and bring the bill to a vote. It is critical that their phones begin ringing off the hook starting early in the morning. If it’s busy, please try again later.

Every band dreams of the lucky night it’ll be discovered by a music promoter or favorite record label. Overnight you’ve got a hot record, radio stations everywhere playing your songs and your band becomes a household name. It’s the classic musician’s fairy tale.

But it is a fairy tale and, for every new artist who is discovered by a major record label, there are thousands who aren’t. For the rest of us, pursuing a career in music is hard. Now, proposed new royalty rates for Internet radio threaten to make it harder. The Copyright Royalty Board recently issued catastrophic royalty rate hikes — increases from 300 to 1,200 percent — which are set to take effect July 15. And some of the increases will be retroactive to January of last year.

While music artists certainly benefit from royalties, this kind of royalty rate hike will mean bankruptcy for almost every Webcaster. Music is a labor of love for many Webcasters, as it is for so many musicians. A significant number of small Internet radio stations already operate at a loss; they carry on because of their commitment to the music they play. A dramatic rate hike is more than most can bear.

Right now, independent artists make up less than 10 percent of what’s played on broadcast radio, but on Internet radio, we make up about 37 percent.

The reality is if our representatives in Congress allow these new royalty rates to go into effect — and it’s within Congress’ power to decide — it’ll make it far harder for independent artists like us to make it. Worse for those of us who are also music fans, online radio will start to sound a whole lot more like broadcast radio. Millions of people whose musical tastes aren’t served by broadcast radio will be left without an alternative.

While we’ve become believers in Internet radio for selfish reasons — as both artists and listeners — the principle of creating a marketplace encouraging artistic entrepreneurs stands on its own. It should be no surprise that the Internet, which has been the source of innovation in so many different industries, has been the home of and outlet for innovation in the music industry.

From an artists perspective, killing Internet radio means that thousands of great bands will go undiscovered — and that’s nothing but bad news for artists.

Killing Internet radio will not only stifle the great technology we have now, it will also stifle the innovation of even better, newer and more exciting ways to enjoy music — and that’s nothing but bad news for all of us.

So while you may think that Internet Radio is not going to suffer, think again. These stations that broadcast music are not making massive amounts of ad revenue to begin with. A push towards these higher royalty fees is no doubt going to hurt the amount of fresh music you will get to hear.
